Remember the Hula Hoop?

Remember the Hula Hoop?

Girl Hula Hoop

Hours and hours of fun when you were a kid.

Practicing over and over again all the tricks until you could show off what you knew.

I was at a Women's Council of REALTORS Regional Summit last year in Dayton, Ohio when a fellow WCRmember, who I never met and can't remember her name, showed up at our table  with these over-sized hula hoops.  As it turned out these were adult hula hoops.  Just too cool.  She actually made her hula hoops  herself, she  got the  directions offline.  And she re-taught herself how to hoop and all the tricks too, all on line.  She said she would just find a youtube  video on the trick she wanted to learn and watch it and teach herself.

Of course I'm thinking, okay so she can roll the hoop around her middle, which I thought was pretty good since she was an "older" woman.    But,  when the music started -  this "older" woman strutted up to the dance floor with her hula hoop  in hand and began to dance with it.  It was truly amazing!  She  snaked it around her body like nobody's business.  We were in awe!   And it inspired me to hoop again too.

As soon as I came home I ordered my very own adult hoop from    I was soooooooooo excited when it came  in and was pleasantly surprised that it was like  riding a bike!  I just spun it around my waist and was hooping away.

I have to admit, I have not learned any 'tricks', but I am happy to be hooping.  I hoop a couple times a week while watching a favorite show, 30-60 minutes or in the middle of an exercise routine that calls for a move that hurts my neck, I just hoop for that period  of time instead.

It  also  really helps to de-stress me.  You have  to concentrate on keeping the hoop going that your mind just goes off into a meditation state.  A good thing in this crazy business.

I did look up someinformation and it is considered an actual exercise.   Hula hooping is a low  intensity workout for most people, and according to the American Council on Exercise, you should burn approximately 200 calories if you work out for 30 minutes. This varies according to your current weight.

I would not suggest the hoops sold in the  sports stores that are all wavy.  The  adult hoops are heavier than a childs, so in essence, they are weighted.  I was also pretty bruised when I first started and that is normal too.  The bruising does go away.

I am grateful I was re-introduced to the hula hoop!   Give it a twirl and enjoy!
